Chicago publica un concierto histórico recién remezclado a partir de las cintas multipista originales por el trompetista y miembro fundador Lee Loughnane y el ingeniero Tim Jessup. Esta recopilación de 26 temas en directo se grabó el 16 de septiembre de 1971, aproximadamente una semana después de la inauguración del John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts en la capital del país. Durante más de 50 años, el concierto ha permanecido inédito a excepción de la interpretación de «Goodbye», que debutó en 2018 en CHICAGO: VI DECADES LIVE.

El espectáculo explora los tres álbumes de estudio que Chicago publicó desde su debut en 1969. Las canciones abarcan una amplia gama de estilos, subrayando la capacidad de la banda para mezclar géneros a la perfección. La banda comenzaría a grabar CHICAGO V pocos días después de la actuación en el Kennedy Center. Publicado en julio de 1972, el álbum marcó una evolución significativa en el sonido de la banda y se convertiría en el primer álbum número 1 de Chicago. Para prepararse para el estudio, Loughnane dice que la banda probó algunas canciones nuevas en D.C. «Un ejemplo: hicimos “Saturday In The Park” por primera vez en el Kennedy Center.
